Helen Chadwick and Keld Helmer- Petersen - photocopier work
Helen Chadwick and Keld Helmer Peterson both explored the potentials of the photocopier, one delving into the search for identity, the other into what can be interpreted as a reflection of our society.
Analysis
What both photographers have exploited is the sharp render of the photocopier, due to the large 'depth of field', a product of scanning the work with all positive and negative space being in focus. Chadwick's pieces are focused in all areas from the shadows to the highlights whereas Helmer-Peterson produces an imprint, a two dimensional base for everyday scenes which we encounter. Due to the two-dimensional nature of Helmer-Peterson's work, the focus is even sharper but with grain to the edges of the object, creating an illusionary, surreal image.
